About Us

Our Mission

Health care needs are multi-dimensional—emotional and spiritual, as much as physical and financial.

We coordinate and connect members to care for the whole need with prayer, encouragement, and financial support.

One of Samaritan Ministries’ strengths is their staff . . . they ask to pray with and for you. They are so beyond helpful, I’m absolutely amazed.

In the late 1980’s, Samaritan Ministries’ founder, Ted Pittenger, joined a health care sharing ministry and was inspired by the potential for this non-insurance option to provide Biblical, affordable health care for the Christian community. Intrigued by this method of sharing health care costs, he began prayerfully considering how he might improve the process to reach a wider population, share medical needs more efficiently, and maintain Biblical foundations. His new model became Samaritan Ministries International, which began sharing medical burdens in 1994.

Sustainability & Transparency

In order to facilitate the direct health care sharing model, one month a year each household’s share amount goes to support the administrative staff and functions of SMI, and sustain our mission into the future.

Samaritan Ministries has a yearly independent audit available upon request. Samaritan Ministries files a federal form 990 annually, and it is available to the public here. Samaritan Ministries also has an annual report available upon request.

Samaritan Ministries satisfies the Federal health care law’s (Affordable Care Act) requirement that individuals purchase insurance or pay a penalty-tax (see 26 United States Code Section 5000A, (d) (2) (B)).

Samaritan Ministry received a letter of certification as a recognized health care sharing ministry by the Department of Health & Human Services (via Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services). View Samaritan Ministry’s certification letter.
