Noteworthy: Give to God your lives

Once when the Pharisees and Herodians were trying to catch Jesus in a trap (Mark 12:13-17), they asked Him about the lawfulness of paying taxes to Caesar. Jesus requested a coin and asked whose image was on it. “Caesar’s,” was their reply. So, Jesus said, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” His response left them speechless.
There is something more profound here than a clever retort concerning taxes. Jesus declares that the whole of a person’s life belongs to God. While Caesar’s image is impressed upon a metal piece of currency, God’s image is impressed upon every human life. Give to Caesar his coin, Jesus says. Give to God your lives.
As we are conformed to the image of Christ, we submit all of our selves to Him, the Giver of life: our relationships, our finances, our health. When we think about health care and the sharing community we are a part of, let’s remember to render to God the things that are God’s.
